Frequently asked questions

My child suffers from atopic dermatitis. Can I use Oh, Baby! products if my child has eczema?

All Oh, Baby! products are dermatologically tested on sensitive skin. That includes people with a mild form of eczema and people who have had an allergic reaction in the past. During testing the products were found to be hypoallergenic, meaning the tests ran perfectly: not a single test subject showed a (negative) skin reaction.

More than that: our formula contains inulin, a prebiotic that feeds beneficial skin bacteria, and Lactobacillus ferment, a postbiotic known for its skin-soothing and barrier-supporting properties. Scientific studies (Antão et al*) show that this type of ingredient can help support the skin balance of eczema-prone skin when applied topically.

Still in doubt? You can always introduce the products step by step. You can use the Oh, Baby! Liniment straight away, and then consider working through the following steps:

  1. Start with the Oh, Baby! Body Wash & Shampoo or the Oh, Baby! Foaming Wash, since you rinse these off after washing. If that goes well, move on to the next step.
  2. Give your baby a bath with the Oh, Baby! Bath Oil. Our Bath Oil helps eczema-prone skin by protecting the skin barrier during bathing and reducing dryness and itching.
  3. Finally, try the Oh, Baby! Body Milk. If your child's skin responds well, we recommend moisturising very regularly. Moisturising is essential for eczema-prone skin because it strengthens the dry, fragile skin barrier and so helps reduce itching, irritation and inflammation.

Still not convinced? No problem at all — this is about your child! Feel free to request a sample by sending an email to hello@oh-baby-care.com. You are of course also welcome to send any other questions there. We are happy to help!

*Antão et al. showed that prebiotic creams containing inulin and similar oligosaccharides significantly reduced the severity of atopic dermatitis in children (SCORAD score) after 8 weeks of use. That is why this care range is particularly suitable for dry, sensitive and easily irritated baby and children's skin.

the probiotics, good bacteria that strengthen the skin barrier.

The pre- and probiotics can even have a positive effect on eczema. 😊 As long as the eczema is not open, you can absolutely use our products on your children.

For very sensitive skin I always recommend building the products up: first the body wash & shampoo because you rinse it off anyway, then the oil (it moisturises intensively, which is of course always good for eczema-prone skin) or the bubble bath, and if your children tolerate both well, the body milk too. The liniment you can always use, without any doubt.

Do Oh, Baby! products contain perfume?

The Oh, Baby! liniment is completely perfume-free.

All our other Oh, Baby! products contain a very small amount of perfume — 0.2%, to be precise. Almost nothing, but not nothing. That was of course a very deliberate choice. Perfume is not really good for the skin or for your health (it can disrupt hormone balance, for example). At the same time, the scent of care products is something very emotional. You want your little one to smell lovely, of course. :-) That is why we have limited the amount of perfume we use to an absolute minimum. And so every Oh, Baby! product carries the ultra-subtle scent of fig and rosemary.

The perfume we use at Oh, Baby! is also an organic perfume. In terms of health, that is something very different from the artificial, synthetic perfumes that are so often used.

What is the difference between bio and organic?

The answer is very simple: in this context there is no difference :-) Organic is the same as Bio.

What is the difference between natural and organic?

Let's explain the difference between natural and organic with an apple. Every apple is natural because every apple is a product of nature. But not every apple is organic because an apple could have been treated with pesticides.

What do the Ecocert Organic or Cosmos Organic guidelines stand for?

The guidelines include that
- We strive for 100% natural ingredients. Unless there is no natural alternative for a particular ingredient. This is the reason why you see eg '99.3% natural 'on certain products.
- Minimum 20% of the ingredients are from organic origin. 20% you say? This may seem small, but be aware that this disregards water and that ofter over 70% water is used in cosmetics. Of the remaining 30%, therefore, at least 20% (or 2/3)!) must come from organic cultivation. Also know that with other guidelines this percentage is a lot lower, eg at Cosmebio 10% organic ingredients are sufficient, with Ecocert Eco only 5%.
- All harmful substances are prohibited such as parabens, sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), synthetic emulsifiers (PEG, PPG, ...), talc, mineral oil, ...

What exactly does vegan mean?

Vegan means that the product contains no ingredients that come directly or indirectly from an animal. 'Directly' means that we do not use animal products such as sheep fat (yes, you read that right!) in our products. 'Indirectly' means that we do not use products such as honey.
Vegan also means that the products or ingredients are not tested on animals.

What are prebiotics and probiotics?

Bacteria can be classified into 3 main groups:
- Bad bacteria: these can cause redness, itching and irritation on the skin
- Good bacteria or probiotics: these strengthen our immune systems and protect the skin against bad bacteria and itching, irritation and redness. Several studies on the impact of probiotics on atopic skin ae currently ongoing.
- Prebiotics, are 'helpers' for the good bacteria. They ensure that the good bacteria or probiotics recover more easily and grow faster.

What are the advantages of prebiotics and probiotics for your baby's skin?

In healthy skin, the skin's microbiotics are in balance. This means that the bad bacteria do not dominate the probiotics (= good bacteria) and prebiotics (= helpers of the good bacteria, see above).
Prebiotics and probiotics in skin care products help to prevent itching, redness and other skin disorders, to maintain and repair the skin barrier, and prevent dandruff and cradle cap, ...
Several studies investigating the potentially positive effect of probiotics on eczema are currently ongoing.

What does 'dermatologically tested' mean?

All our products undergo extensive testing under the supervision of a dermatological team. What is more, our tests are carried out on test subjects with 'sensitive skin'. That means, for example, that they are prone to eczema or have previously had allergic reactions to cosmetic products. The dermatologists assess the test subjects' skin at several moments: immediately after the product is applied, after 20 minutes, after 24 hours, after 48 hours and finally once more after 72 hours. Since not a single test subject showed any skin reaction at any point, all our products have been found hypoallergenic by the dermatologists.

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap is caused by transpiration or excessive sebum secretion that is held by dead cells on the skin's surface until scabs form. The scabs are not harmful in themselves but, besides not being aesthetically pleasing, they can also harbour bad bacteria.
Oh, Baby! Body Wash & Shampoo contains prebiotics and probiotics which help to prevent cradle cap and maintain the natural balance between good and bad bacteria.
To remove these crusts, massage some Oh, Baby! bath oil or another oil (such as almond oil) on the cradle cap before bathing. Leave the oil on the skin for 15 minutes so that the crusts soften and soak off. Brush the scabs out of your baby's hair with a soft brush. Never pull them off. If they don't come off immediately, you can repeat this step again, at least until your baby has had enough! Otherwise, you'll need to wait until next bath time :-). Then wash the hair with Oh, Baby! Body Wash & Shampoo for optimal results.
